August Algorithm

August Finds: The Good, the Great, and the "Why Did I Even Bother?

August was the month I succumbed to the internet algorithm and a few influencers I pretend aren’t influencing me. I picked up some new things, fell in love with a few of them, and had one major letdown that still has me fuming. So, let's break it down: the hits, the repurchases, and the one item that failed so spectacularly it’s being shipped back to wherever bad shoes go. (non-affiliate links)

The Hits: New Purchases I’m Obsessed With

1. Shark HD430 FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System

I saw this beauty being flaunted across my feeds for months, but the price tag made my wallet give me side-eye. Then, my hair dryer died a tragic death (RIP), and I took the plunge. Let me tell you, this thing is worth every single penny. Not only does it cut my drying time in half, but it’s also ridiculously easy to use. My hair has never looked so good with so little effort. If you can wait for a sale (hello, Amazon Prime Day), do it, but if your dryer is hanging by a thread like mine was, go ahead and treat yourself now. You’ll thank me later.

2. Caraway Nonstick Sauté Pan

I’m a sucker for cookware that’s both functional and pretty, and this sauté pan checks all the boxes. I snagged it on sale (because who pays full price these days?), and it’s quickly become my go-to in the kitchen. The nonstick surface is actually nonstick—like, eggs sliding off with no oil kind of nonstick. Plus, it comes in the most gorgeous colors (I went with the yellow, naturally) and includes a cleaning tool in case of any discoloration. This is one of those rare finds that’s both a joy to use and Instagram-worthy.

3. Mesh Ballet Flats

I’ll admit, I was hesitant to jump on the mesh ballet flats trend. But after scouring the internet for a pair that wouldn’t break the bank and had decent reviews, I found the perfect ones. These babies are comfortable, stylish, and have held up through miles of walking. They dress up any outfit and add just the right amount of fun. If you’re on the fence, consider this your nudge to take the plunge.

4. Large Top-Handle Canvas Tote

My quest for a stylish, compact “diaper bag” led me to this gem. It’s everything I wanted: durable canvas material, easily washable (thank you, washing machine), and just the right number of pockets. I even bought some cute zip pouches to keep everything organized—crayons in one, snacks in another, and extra clothes/undies in the last. It’s a quality bag that’s not only functional but also stylish enough that I don’t feel like a walking toddler supply closet.

5. TirTir Foundation

After a year of loyalty to my Wet n Wild Bare Focus Tinted Moisturizer, (also, try this one if you havent, don’t let the bargain price scare you- it’s bomb.) I was feeling the itch to try something new. Enter TirTir Foundation, which I spotted all over Amazon and Instagram. I’m thrilled to report it lives up to the hype. The shade range is fantastic, and the coverage is perfect—enough to hide my dark circles and blemishes but still buildable for more stubborn spots. Plus, it’s travel-friendly (hello, sponge foundation) and doesn’t make me break out. It’s a win all around.

6. Biodance BioCollagen Mask

For anyone who caught my Instagram story where I looked like Hannibal Lecter’s less charming cousin, I can officially say the Biodance BioCollagen Mask was worth the scare. My skin literally glowed for days afterward—no extra products needed. It was a bit tricky to fall asleep with it on, but it stayed in place and delivered some serious hydration. This mask is now a staple in my nighttime skincare routine.

The Repeats: Stuff I Loved So Much I Bought Again

1. Dibs Island Duo Stick

I first bought this back in June, and let me tell you, the hype is real. The blendability is unreal, and it gives my skin the perfect glow—not the weird sparkly kind, but the kind that says, “Yes, I drink enough water and eat all my veggies.” Shade 2 has been my go-to all summer and is still working as my tan fades. The dual-ended brush is a dream, and the fact that it doesn’t cause breakouts makes it even better. It’s so easy to use and travel-friendly. Obsessed.

2. Ilia Mascara

I’ve been using this mascara for over a year and a half, and as a self-proclaimed mascara snob, that says something. It separates, volumizes, lifts—everything you could want. The best part? It layers beautifully. Whether you’re touching up before dinner or layering in the morning, it never clumps. It washes off easily and has clean ingredients. This is, hands down, the best mascara I’ve ever used.

The Dud: What I’m Returning and Why

Room of Fashion Sandals

I was hunting for a dupe of the Schutz Sporty Sandal and thought I hit the jackpot with these on Amazon. Spoiler alert: I didn’t. The sizing is ridiculous—you need to order at least three sizes up to even get them on your feet. And don’t even think about exchanging them because their stock is as scarce as common sense in a rom-com. I’m so annoyed I’m seriously considering just splurging on the Schutz sandals because, at this point, I deserve something cute that actually fits.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it—my August purchases, complete with the good, the great, and the one that made me question my life choices. Reminder, none of the links I share are affiliate links, so you can trust that these recommendations are purely based on my own experience (and occasional frustration). If I ever do start earning a commission, my recs will STILL be based on my experience, but I promise to let you know. For now, these are just the things that made me smile—or in one case, scream into the void.

Have anything that I’ve mentioned here? Any of your own recs? Disagree with my review? Leave them in the comments!

You’re Doing Great,

Samantha
